MAPACHES EN EL TEMPLO
[1:59]
The title means "Raccoons in the Temple"....dedicated to the brief stay of four baby raccoons in my studio back in 2010. They were left motherless and we cared for them until their proper release. I like to create music that gives an impression of something. This piece is from the soon to come 2013 CD "MUSICA FELIZ" (Happy Music). This melodic piece sets a mood of late night with no one at the ceremonial places, no festivals, no ceremonies and all of a sudden a mother raccoon and her babies come walking in; sniffing around and touching everything they can and then returning into the night!
The title means "Opening the Cosmos". A very strong, deep and intense piece from a CD that I may release someday. Meanwhile, you get to buy this piece because so many people love it. Instruments: Gourd Mayan Trumpets, Olla de barro, Huehuetl, and Huilacapitzli (clay ocarina) and Tlapitzalli (clay flute).
This piece is from that same CD that I will release one day. It is about the the sacred hummingbird Huitzilopochtli, you can hear the flute imitating the fluttering of his wings as he flies about.
"The Sacred Astrologers" is the title's meaning. One of the things, we know they did was read and interpreted the calendar for the Maya emperors, making sure they could tell their people that there would be a future, things would look good and to not despair.
EL NACIMIENTO DE LA PRINCESA (CD: Curandero)
[4:23]
Composed for my daughter in Oct 1989. The title means "The birth of the princess" and that she is...the best thing I ever created :-)...thanks to her mom, of course :-)
Yes, the jaguar voice is me, it's an instrument I invented back in the 1980's and no, no one else had anything close to this instrument. Inspired by the jaguar I saw in Tabasco, Mexico. The title means "The awakened jaguar" which I allude to our culture's rebirth.
The words are in Nahuatl: Ometeotl, Ipalnemohuani, In tlalticpac, in topan, in mictlan....it's a song of praise to the creator, a thank you to my ancestors and my parents, for the gift of life.
REGRESO AL MICTLAN (CD: El Dia de Los Muertos)
[5:08]
The title means "Return to Mictlan", when the spirits of our loved ones, whom we believe, come visit us during Los Dias De Los Muertos, return to the land of the dead, sort meaning heaven. This is all positive and beautiful, nothing to "read into or misinterpret", just love, love, love....
CALAVERAS FELICES (CD: El Dia de Los Muertos)
[2:11]
The title means "Happy Skeletons", hahahaha....nothing but love we have for our loved ones, this is how El Dia de Los Muertos is practiced. Nothing negative, scary or too weird, just love!
Chalchayotes are the rattles worn on the ankles of "Mexica" (meh-shee-kah) dancers, sometimes called Aztec dancers. The sounds of them is believed to bring happiness. Music was thought by the ancients to be representative of the things people long for on this earth.
Is this is traditional dance rhythm used by Mexica danzantes.
Tezcatlipoca, another manifestation of the Creator, since Mexica thought constantly referred to "ONE GOD", Tezcatli[poca is the energy of the smoking mirror. This is also traditional "Mexica" (Meh-shee-kah) dance.
This is 33 minutes of constant, relaxing indigenous Californian instruments, the background is composed of birds I recorded "live" outside in Soledad, CA and a creek in San Dimas, CA....this result of beautiful...FANS you can set your price, I appreciate what you offer me..this is my little gift to you. Remember California has many, many ancient connections to Mexico. The whole CD is sounds like this...
One of the first recordings of it's kind. Composed and Performed by Martin Espino. Recorded in 1984 and in 1992 later digitally remastered. Tracks 1-6 represent the music of Ancient Mexico, in a large ensemble format. Tracks 7-10 represent music of the Amazon region and Tracks 11 & 12 are what I call "Intercultural music" using all ancient instruments of the America(s) and some from Africa, to make a "what if" guess "what would the music sound if Africans had arrived and the Europeans never came?"
All instruments with voices only as effects. All natural acoustic indigenous instruments
Composed and performed by Martin Espino on ALL indigenous Mexican instruments back in 2010. This is definitely one of the very first recordings about The Day of the Dead ever done! I composed my music for this CD out of respect to and love for, my parents, who have passed on.
I didn't want to make scary music because it not what Day of the Dead is about, it is about remembering those who have passed on as they passed to "unknown region". So, I thought what would music sound like if heard in this "unknown region", "in another dimension through the veil of time and space and life and death!" So, it came out very open, huge, ceremonial, maybe a little strange but out of love as I hope all who pass on go somewhere beautiful.
Every CD I do has different instruments on each, I try hard not to repeat the same sounds, instruments and styles. Here you'll hear my jaguar voice instrument, water drums, bass ocarinas, one song that is sung in Nahuatl and whispering in Nahuatl. Many of the instruments made by my hands.
All based on years of scholarly research of my ancestral music! And yes you can meditate and relax to this as well.
MEXIKA "Sounds of Ancient Mexico" on this recording is: Martin Espino - Mexican Wind Instruments and Voice; Nazario Segura - Huehuetl drum and Yaqui Water Drums; Gabriel Castaneda - Huehuetl, Ayacaxtli and Teponaztli, and Erick Barraza - Timbales de Barro and Tetl.
We had fun playing at a local place here in Long Beach, CA called Viento y Agua Coffeehouse (for me it's a place to do "live" rehearsals) and when we heard the digital recording they did, we loved it, I took it home and remixed it; the result is this wonderful upbeat CD of indigenous "danza" music, without the dancers, lol. So, if you've ever seen what are called "Aztec dancers" those are the rhythms we're using plus a few original pieces we improvised "live". Enjoy this wake up music! This is longest CD at about 60 minutes of music!
EK BALAM is Mayan for Black Jaguar. This CD is an excursion into "Soundscapes", in other words, NO melodies or rhythms! The object, just how many sounds can I get from these instruments (all Mexican/Central America) and some instruments were put through a sound processing device. SO, this is a meeting of Acoustic and Electronic. The mood of this recording is heavy and deep, great for meditation and such. SO, the best title for the mood is Black Jaguar. On my CDs I like to release something different from the rest, plus it shows that our instruments are capable of many styles and moods! By the way, this CD is not a recording of one of my groups called EK BALAM but it's a beautiful recording anyway!
New for 2013!!! I recorded a group of native CA birds up in the Soledad Hills in Central CA, then I recorded a creek in San Dimas, CA putting the mic in a plastic bag right next to the flowing water, then I edited and mixed it at a very nice studio! At home I added Indigenous Calfornian musical instruments, that I had to make because they are extremely difficult to get. I did this CD mainly because no one has done a CD on this subject and because of the connection to Mexico that CA has in it's indigenous languages and other connections. Imagine, 33 continuous minutes of the birds and the creek and dreamy Californian style Flutes, Hummingbird Buzzers, Conch Shells, California Whistle Pipes, Bear Whistle and more. If you like the sounds of the Native American Flute, you'll love the sound of the CA Flutes. They are completely hollow flutes and blown the same way as a Nai or Anasazi flutes are played! Again, it's 33 minutes of non stop dream state! NO one has done any recording like this, ever!!!!

These flutes are hand made by me, me, me, Martin Espino, who has been making instruments from Bamboo and Gourd since 1990. I have made over 50,000 instruments since that time, either or sale, many at school residencies and some private sales, but now here are the big ones I make for myself and now you can have one!!! Generally, they are tuned either D above middle C or Eb, they are pentatonic and produce at least 5, sometimes 7 notes, depending on how they want to act. Pentatonic, for those who don't know is the sound you get when you play on the black keys, or the sound of Native American Flutes.
The burned etching on the flute is the sacred figure of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent. They measure about 2 1/2 feet long, and have a fat mellow sound, they do not jump into the next octave, so again, 5 maybe 7 notes, enough to create beautiful sacred sounds of your own!
NOTE:
I do not always have these in stock as they sell out fast!!! Please allow 2 weeks for delivery, that's if I have to make one for you, otherwise I ship out the same week.
SHIPPING:
The price within the USA is $85 and includes shipping, outside the USA, shipping charges will be added, according to where you are. I will contact you and tell you how much the total price would be. You may contact me via email.
High pitched bird whistles hand made by me, me, me, Martin Espino. I even harvested the bamboo at the river! The sound is manipulated from the large front hole "only", usually with the palm of the hand, not the fingers. I sell tons of these to kids everywhere! Price includes shipping within the USA. Shipping charges will change if outside the USA, ok?
Not advisable for preschoolers, the whistle must "always" be held with two fingers while playing it. Different sounds are achieved by varying breath pressure as well as using long and short breaths. Birds are associated with being closest to the Creator and represent the sacred voices of Mother Earth.
You may contact me by email to ask further questions!
These little guys are about 8-10 inches long, this is the same flute I make for my Workshops and Residencies with 3rd graders to adults. The paints are made by me, they are natural pigment that every race used in prehistoric times to now! The flutes have a mellow, not high pitched tone. They produce 5 and sometimes 7 tones. The note they are tuned to varies, because I don't make them to play with guitars and pianos, if you want that I'll have to change the price. These flutes are basically made to play solo or with intimate, mellow percussion as in most indigenous music of the Americas! They are tuned to the "pentatonic" scale (the formation of the sounds of the black notes on the piano).
Shipping included if within the USA, if you're outside the USA I may have to charge different shipping charges ok? You may contact me via email if you have any questions.
Please note, that when you purchase one of these instruments, that I have to spend time to make these for you individually, so when you order one you have to wait, at least 3 weeks for me to make it and then mail it; it could sooner tthough. You may contact me by email with your questions. When you spin these instruments they "growl" as it is a friction drum. Sometimes the bodies are made of gourd like this one or of bamboo, it depends on what is available in my workshop. These is an instrument that was used in ancient Mexico and other countries.
Shipping included within the USA, if you're outside the USA I may have to add extra shipping charges ok?
I make these to order only because the material is not always available. Size and tones are different, usually they are more available at the 4-6 inch size. Larger ones are possible but again, the material is not always available, you'd do best to write and ask if a certain is available, ok?
